ABOUT EASTER SUNDAYThe Easter Triduum – the three days from Holy Thursday through to Easter Sunday - is the heart of the liturgical year. Easter is the high point of the entire liturgical cycle. It celebrates the central mystery of Christ - his triumph over death and the cross by his resurrection.
The Easter Fire is a key symbol of Easter. For Christians, Jesus is the Light of the World, who once and for all conquers the darkness. During the Easter Vigil, when we celebrate the resurrection, we begin with the Easter fire as a symbol of light conquering darkness. The Paschal Candle is lit from the Easter fire and burns throughout the Easter season. It is also used during baptisms and funerals, connecting these celebrations during the rest of the year with the Easter event. Easter Sunday marks the beginning of fifty days of celebration – the season of Easter. The liturgical colours for Easter are white and gold representing purity, joy and celebration. |
