ABOUT GOOD FRIDAYIt was on this day that Jesus was nailed to the cross and died because he claimed to be the son of God. Many Christians spend Good Friday in fasting, prayer and repentance in commemoration of Jesus' suffering and death on the cross.
On Good Friday, we remember the Lord’s death through the Stations of the Cross, a symbolic pilgrimage consisting of 14 stations where people stop to pray, meditate, and read Biblical passages at each station. The Good Friday Passion of the Lord liturgy has three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, the Veneration of the Cross, and the Service of Communion. We venerate the wood of the cross on Good Friday by kissing the cross to not only honour Jesus’ self-sacrifice but commit ourselves to live by that cross. It is likely that the name for Good Friday comes from the word "good" once meaning "holy,". Another theory is that good might also come from it once being called "God's Friday." The liturgical colour for Good Friday is red - symbolising Christ’s passion and the blood he shed to save us. |
